As we've read, contributions both for schools and members have increased since 2019.
The question management teams should be asking themselves is: what do we need to do if, as looks likely, costs keep rising?
Latest figures show the number of independent schools remaining in the Teachers' Pension Scheme (TPS) has fallen below 1,000 for the first time as of 2025.
According to the latest Department of Education figures obtained under a Freedom of Information request, 676 schools remain in the TPS as of 30th January 2025. This compares to 1,086 when Secondsight made the same request in June 2024. There are just under 2,500 independent schools in the UK.
The figures suggest 312 have left since September 2019, with a further 268 opting for what’s known as “phased withdrawal” – or closing TPS membership to new employees – since that time.
Now, rises in national insurance contributions, combined with VAT being imposed on school fees, are exerting further pressure on schools.
